EURL-VTEC, hosted by the ISS, was designated by the European Commission in 2006. Its activity is focused on pathogenic E. coli that will have either a foodborne or a zoonotic origin. It has been accredited according to the ISO/IEC 17025 international standard since December 2007 and its main activities are: development of analytical methods for the detection, identification and typing of pathogenic E. coli, laboratory training and organization of proficiency tests for the designated NRLs for E. coli, the EU, including the Candidate Countries and certain third countries.
